How to make an integrated transistor amplifier ?

Integrated Transistor Amplifier

We have already learnt about the basics of integrated circuits, Monolithic IC manufacturing process and its fabrication. In this post we are going to illustrate how a complete transistor amplifier circuit including bias resistors can be formed on a silicon wafer using photolithographic process. In the process the masking pattern must be laid carefully to include additional interconnections as well. The figure above shows a schematic diagram of an integrated transistor amplifier. Below shown is its corresponding IC layout. The circuit has five components — one capacitor, three resistors, and one transistor. These components are interconnected and produced by the same masking, etching, and diffusion process. In an actual IC the circuit elements would not appear so close to each other, as shown below. Rather the elements would be so spaced as to make maximum use of the available space and to reduce the length of the interconnections as minimum as possible. The tandem arrangement is used here merely for convenience and clarification. The total area on the chip covered by this amplifier is a very small fraction of a square mm.
